Our Materials

We believe you deserve to know exactly what you are wearing. Every Zilvra piece starts with carefully chosen materials, selected for their beauty, durability, and ethical credentials. Here is the complete breakdown.
Sterling Silver 925
The “925” stamp on your jewelry is not decorative. It is a guarantee. Sterling silver must contain 92.5% pure silver by weight — the remaining 7.5% is typically copper, added for strength and durability. Pure silver (99.9%) is too soft to hold its shape in daily wear. It bends, scratches, and deforms under pressure. The copper alloy gives sterling silver the structural integrity it needs while preserving the metal’s natural luster, workability, and antibacterial properties.
Why 92.5% specifically? Decades of metallurgical research found this to be the optimal ratio. Higher silver content produces metal that is too soft. Lower silver content begins to lose the characteristic color, luster, and tarnish resistance that make silver desirable. The 925 standard was codified in law centuries ago and remains the global benchmark today.
When you see a “925” or “S925” stamp on a Zilvra piece, you are holding metal that meets international standards for sterling silver. We test every batch for purity before it enters our workshop.
Gold Vermeil
Gold vermeil (pronounced “ver-may”) is not the same as gold plating. By definition, vermeil requires:
• A base of sterling silver (never brass or copper)
• A gold layer of at least 2.5 microns thick
• The gold must be 10 karats or higher
Zilvra’s gold vermeil pieces use 18k gold at a thickness of 3+ microns — exceeding industry standards. This thicker layer means your vermeil jewelry resists wear far longer than standard gold-plated pieces. With proper care, the warm gold finish can last for years.
Vermeil offers the look of solid gold at a fraction of the price, with the added benefit of a sterling silver core. If the gold layer eventually wears thin in high-contact areas, the silver beneath is still a precious metal — not a cheap base metal that will turn your skin green.
Gemstones
We use two categories of gemstones in our designs:
Cubic Zirconia (CZ) Our CZ stones are hand-selected for clarity, cut, and fire. Unlike cheap crystals, high-grade CZ has a refractive index close to diamond, producing genuine sparkle. We use stones graded AAAAA (the highest commercial grade) with excellent cut symmetry. CZ is lab-created, making it an ethical and affordable alternative to mined gemstones.
Semi-Precious Stones Our collections include natural stones such as amethyst, moonstone, turquoise, onyx, and labradorite. Each stone is unique — variations in color, pattern, and inclusions are natural characteristics, not flaws. We source these stones through suppliers who adhere to fair-trade principles.
Ethical Sourcing We do not use conflict minerals. Our gemstone suppliers provide certification of origin, and we audit our supply chain annually. By prioritizing lab-created and ethically sourced natural stones, we eliminate the environmental and human-rights concerns associated with conventional mining.
Nickel-Free: Why It Matters
Nickel is a common metal allergen. An estimated 10–20% of the population has a nickel sensitivity, with women affected at higher rates due to more frequent jewelry exposure. Symptoms range from mild itching and redness to blistering and dermatitis.
All Zilvra925 jewelry is certified nickel-free. We use copper as our primary alloying metal, not nickel. This makes our pieces safe for sensitive skin and those with known metal allergies. If you have ever reacted to “silver-tone” or costume jewelry, the culprit was almost certainly nickel — not silver.
Recycled Metals
Sustainability is not a marketing angle for us — it is a material reality. Zilvra uses 100% recycled sterling silver in all core collections. Our recycled silver comes from post-consumer sources (old jewelry, industrial silver) and post-industrial scrap (metal left over from manufacturing processes).
Recycled silver is chemically identical to newly mined silver. The refining process purifies the metal to the same 92.5% standard. The only difference is the environmental footprint: recycled silver production uses 95% less energy and generates 90% less pollution than mining new silver from ore.

Plating and Finishes
|
Finish |
Description |
Care Notes |
|
Rhodium Plating |
A thin layer of rhodium (a platinum-group metal) over sterling silver. Creates a bright, white, highly reflective surface. Resists tarnish. |
Avoid abrasive cleaning. Re-plating recommended every 1–2 years with heavy wear. |
|
Oxidized/Antiqued |
Intentional darkening of recessed areas using a liver-of-sulfur solution. Creates contrast and highlights design detail. |
The dark patina is surface-level. Do not use baking soda or polishing cloths — they will remove it. Clean with soap and water only. |
|
Brushed/Satin |
Matte surface created by directional abrasion. Does not show fingerprints or scratches as readily as polished finishes. |
Can be refreshed by a jeweler with light abrasion. Avoid polishing cloths — they will create shiny patches. |
|
High Polish |
Mirror-like reflective surface. The classic silver look. |
Shows scratches and fingerprints easily. Regular polishing keeps it bright. |
Material Certifications and Testing
Every Zilvra production batch undergoes:
• X-ray fluorescence (XRF) testing to verify silver purity and confirm the absence of nickel, lead, and cadmium
• Assay certification for gold vermeil pieces, verifying gold karat and micron thickness
• Gemological grading for semi-precious stones, confirming authenticity and quality
• Supplier audit documentation for ethical sourcing claims
